We were honored to host our 2026-2027 District Governor Tina Curtis at our October 19, 2026 meeting

Tina shared great optimism for this Rotary Year.

Welcome DG Tina Curtis!

Tina wanted to start the meeting by asking everyone to introduce themselves and share something that may not be well known.  She noted that preparing to be District Governor (DG) is a 30 month process of training and learning from other governors.  Our previous governor, Melissa McCormick, chose to do “connect” meetings which involved area-wide meetings with multiple clubs converging together.  She believes that connection opened the opportunity for the success of our Polio Walk to be completed this week.  It will include multiple clubs, across multiple states, and two countries.

She believes her position is to serve the clubs in any capacity they may need.  She had enjoyed celebrating each club in her visits.  She pointed out the various projects we do, such as the John Deere Classic parking, District Grant projects, support of Rock Island Children's Advocacy, flag distribution, and reading to kindergartners.  Each club is creating lasting impact in their own way. Our efforts directly or indirectly contribute to peace in our community.

She asked everyone to close our eyes and think about a project. What would our community miss if we didn't exist and never completed our projects?  We need think differently about our impact.  We have completed our parking project for over 30 years.  That is due to a strong volunteer group and personal connection with JDC committee managers.

She noted that our “friends of Rotary” who help us with projects are driven to participate by purpose, passion, and projects.  People don't join to attend meetings.  Find their pathway to membership.  What is their passion or purpose?

She wants us to share the “why” we are walking for polio eradication awareness.  Current outbreaks are only in Pakistan and Afghanistan due to ongoing, and long term, global efforts and financial support that is matched 2 for 1 by the Gates Foundation.

Tina was wearing Rotary blue tennis shoes that included our logo that she purchased at the International Convention.  That is the only place you can get them. She walked for two days trying to find them, and finally found an inconspicuous table sporting the shoes.  Unfortunately, they did not have her size.  She started walking away but was called back by the vendor because he discovered that the display model was Tina's size.  So, the moral is, the opportunity is there.  You just have to work for it.

Her own club, located in Walnut, is also 17 members and finding similar challenges we see.  They had some success with recruitment after placing an ad in the newspaper discussing all the projects they are responsible for supporting.  A community member contacted them to become more involved. He originally thought other organizations were handling the projects and he perceived they did not need additional help.

Don't be afraid to try new ideas.  You might be surprised the good that happens.

Nathan brought guest, Morrison, a co-worker interested in joining Rotary.  She is only 19 and has a tremendous amount of experience under her belt already.

Morrison was happy to share a bit about herself.  She started working for the City of Moline when she was 14, working at their camp as a counselor.  She is now the director.  She recently wrote and received a $23,500 grant for their summer program.

George and Kathy had a great time at bingo.  They notified attendees to wear and costume and about half came dressed up. They had about 25 attendees.  The Thrivent shirts in large sizes continue to be especially appreciated by residents.
